Renewals and Changes

Renewals and Changes on your driver license or ID card

Driver licenses and ID cards are valid for six to eight years. Expiration dates may vary for renewals issued to non-immigrants. A licensed driver is required to have car insurance. You may renew your license or identification card up to 18 months prior to expiration date.

A renewal notice is mailed to address on file approximately six weeks prior to expiration date. However, failure to receive a renewal notice will not relieve you from renewing your driver license by expiration date or subsequent penalties which are imposed upon license expiration date.

Driver License and ID cards may be renewed online or in person.  If your driver license or identification card is expired for more than twelve months, you must renew in person.

All customers must present proof of identification, proof of social security, and proof of residential address. Learn more.

Drivers 80 years of age or older who wish to renew their driver license are required to pass a vision test.

To change information on a driver license or ID card, you must apply for a replacement, also known as a duplicate. Fees will apply. In Florida, the law requires individuals to update address information on your driver license within 30 (thirty) days of moving.

Additional fees apply for online services where credit cards are accepted. The fee to change your address in our office is $31.25.

What You’ll Need

Name Change

  • If you have ever legally changed your name by marriage or court order, you must submit the original or a certified copy of your marriage certificate(s) or court order(s). No photocopies will be accepted unless certified by the issuing authority. You must show documentation of all name changes. If you are a non-U.S. citizen, additional documentation is needed, visit the What to Bring page for more information regarding Non-Citizen Documents.
  • In addition to the information you must provide to change your name, be advised that you will also need to provide primary identification documentation. Out-of-state driver licenses will no longer be accepted as primary identification.
  • Proof of social security number is one of the required documents needed to obtain or renew your driver license or identification card. The name assigned to the social security number must match the name that appears on the Florida driver license or identification card.  If you have recently changed your name, update your records with the Social Security Administration at least 24-48 hours BEFORE visiting our office for a name change on your driver license.
  • To change information on a driver license or ID card, you must apply for a replacement, also known as a duplicate. Fees will apply.

Address Change

Did you know that Florida law requires you to update the address on your driver license within 30 (thirty) days after moving?

Important update: Effective June 1, 2022, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will no longer accept out of state or U.S. territory addresses for applicants obtaining a Florida Class E license or Identification Card. These individuals must present proof of a Florida residential address in compliance with established Real ID address requirements. This will not apply to individuals who are United States armed forces personnel on active duty and their dependents who are stationed out of the state of Florida but who are still Florida residents. Updating and changing your driver license information is easy. If you elect to change your address online, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) in Tallahassee will mail you a new license if a digital image is on file. FAQs

Who is eligible to renew their driver license or ID card online?

Most customers are eligible to renew online if their license or ID card is valid or recently expired and a digital photo and signature are already on file. Some customers must visit an office in person due to federal or state requirements.

When do I need to renew my Florida driver license or ID card?

Florida driver licenses and ID cards generally expire every 8 years. You may renew up to 18 months before your expiration date. If your credential has been expired for more than 12 months, an in-office visit is required. If your CDL credential has been expired for more than 12 months, a written exam is also required.

Can I renew my license if it has already expired?

Yes. Licenses expired less than 12 months may be eligible for online renewal. Licenses expired more than 12 months must be renewed in person and will require a written exam.

Do I need to come into the office to change my address?

Not always. Address changes can often be completed online. However, if you need a new photo or updated credential issued immediately, you may choose to visit one of our service locations.

How soon must I update my address after moving?

Florida law requires you to update your address within 30 days of a move. This applies to both driver licenses and ID cards.

Can I change my name online?

No. Name changes must be completed in person. You will need to bring original or certified documentation showing your legal name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.

Do I need to update my Social Security record before changing my name?

Yes. If your name has changed, your information must first be updated with the Social Security Administration at least 24-48 hours before visiting our office. Additionally, if you are an immigrant or non-immigrant, you need to present your immigration documents with proof of name change.

What documents do I need to bring for an in-office renewal or change?

For information on what documents are accepted please visit What to Bring.

What payment methods are accepted?

Online transactions require payment by credit or debit card. In-office services accept cash, check, and most major credit or debit cards. Convenience fees may apply to card transactions. The Tax Collector does not keep any portion of the convenience fee. 100% of the fee belongs to the credit card processing company.

Is there an additional fee for online renewals?

Yes. Online transactions include a processing fee in addition to the standard state fee.

How long will it take to receive my license or ID card?

If renewed or updated online, your new credential is typically mailed within 7–10 business days. In-office customers typically receive the credential in the office the day the transaction is processed. In some cases, a temporary credential may be issued pending the mailing of the original credential.

In most cases, your Florida Identification Card or Driver Licnese is issued during your visit once all requirements are met.

Do I need an appointment to renew or make changes in person?

We do not require an appointment. Walk-ins are always accepted. Visiting earlier in the day may help reduce wait times. Check our wait times online before coming.

What if I need a new photo taken?

If a new photo is required, you must visit one of our service locations. Photos cannot be updated online.

Can I renew both my vehicle registration and driver license at the same time?

These are separate transactions. However, both services may be completed during the same office visit if applicable.
